What happened to the Turkish Consulate in Brussels?

A number of people were injured and taken to hospital as a result of a clash between supporters and opponents of the Turkish government in front of their consulate in central Brussels on Thursday, police said.

A police spokeswoman declined to give details on the number of casualties or the nature of the injuries, Reuters reported.

The Turkish authorities are seeking to win the support of their expatriate community to ensure their votes in a referendum on transforming the country's system of government into a presidential system that strengthens the powers of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Relations between Turkey and European countries were strained after Turkish politicians were prevented from participating in rallies promoting constitutional reforms to be presented to Turkish voters on April 16.
